Model distillation allegations are turning AI capability into an IP battlefield

TechRepublic's coverage of U.S. accusations against Chinese AI firms points to a fight that will only get louder: when does learning from a frontier model become theft, and when is it legitimate competition?

Distillation is technically familiar, but the stakes are different when the teacher model costs billions to build and the student model could help a rival ecosystem catch up. That turns model behavior, API logs, and training methods into evidence in a geopolitical IP dispute.

For developers and policy teams, the question is whether the industry can define enforceable boundaries without crushing open research. If every strong open model is suspected of copying a closed one, trust in benchmarks and model provenance will become harder to maintain.
